Haven't Signed Up for School Yet? Maybe You're a Structured Procrastinator

I'm a procrastinator. Not proud of it, but at least I can admit it. I usually eat to procrastinate, which is really bad for the figure. I just ate three little diet cookies to delay sitting at my desk. Emphasis on the diet.

When I finally sat down at my laptop, it occurred to me that procrastination is what keeps lots of people from going back to school to get their GED certificate, to finish a degree, to get a better job, to learn anything new. So I Googled procrastination, another procrastinating tactic. Three items down on the list, I found a tidy little piece by John Perry of Stanford University on Structured Procrastination. He has a good theory, one I can relate to.

Perry's theory is that structured procrastinators are actually very productive human beings. They do lots of important things. They just don't do the most important things on their list. They do the semi-important things in order to keep from doing the really important ones.

So here's what I'm thinking. If it's important for you to go back to school because you'd be happier or make more money, or whatever, but you've been procrastinating, maybe you're a structured procrastinator too. This means that all you have to do to get yourself back in school is to put a few more important things at the top of your list. Get it? Then you'll go to school to keep from having to do your top items. Can't hurt to give it a try. Visit the forum and let me know how it works out.

Interesting article. I definitely fall into this category. But I think I am going to put off further comments right now. This matter is just too important and I need to alphabetize my post-it notes. :)
