If You Could Take a Continuing Education Course in Anything...

Saturday August 23, 2008
In my search for continuing education around the world, I found a Tasmanian media release from Michelle O'Byrne about the 1000 courses available through the Adult Education program in Launceston, Tasmania. Wow.

“Some of them include Thai Summer Salads, Never Forget a Name of Thingummy Again, Bollywood Dancing, Anzacs on the Western Front, and Living Well beyond Peak Oil,” Ms. O’Byrne said.

“As well as providing fun, stimulating courses in a relaxed setting, Adult Education also offers opportunities to develop skills in work-related areas."

This is the wonderful thing about continuing education. It runs the gamut from keeping your professional license current to having fun learning how to dance the bollywood. Wait. What is bollywood dancing? I don't know, but if I could afford the trip to Tasmania, I'm intrigued enough to sign up!

If you could take a course in anything at your local continuing education center, what would you sign up for? Leave a comment.

I teach a continuing education class in beaded jewelry, and it’s a lot of fun. As for a class I’d like to take, I think it would be tango, but I need a partner for that.

Ooh, I’d love to take your beading class! Other than that, I’d love to take a class in writing a novel. Like most English majors and journalists, I have a dream of being a novelist.

That’s easy, I’d take a class on how to say, “No.” Obviously, I’m overcommitted.

I would take more studio art classes…more advanced pottery and sculpture. I’ve always wanted to learn silversmithing and metal working for jewelry making. I’d also take just a ton of history and literature courses.

I love school…in case you couldn’t tell!

Where to start? I loved studying languages in college (German, Latin, Old English and Old Norse), and so I’d be thrilled to find and participate in an immersion course on modern Norwegian.

I love learning any sort of new handcraft – right now I’d like to learn to do Hardanger embroidery / beadwork. For personal reasons (life enrichment?) I’d like to learn more about the Feldenkrais method and about clutter control / home organization (we’re in serious need of an Andrew Mellon-style intervention)!

Oops. Make that a “Peter Walsh”-style intervention. Don’t know where I got “Andrew Mellon” – but maybe I’d better check out Alzheimer courses as well! :D

Asian cooking. I love to stir-fry, but I can’t shake the thought that I’m doing it wrong.

I think I would take a few writing improvement courses and a Spanish class. I have alwasy wanted to learn Spanish, and, although I know alot of words, find it difficult to conjugate verbs.

(10) Kallie says:

I would take Italian language courses… I need to learn Italian.

Art classes are always fun, too, but I’d better finish my language requirements first!

(11) Karin says:

I would also love to take an Italian language course as I have a real thing for Italy. I would also love to do a professional patisserie training in France… not to become a chef, but just for the experience.

I’d love to learn how to improve my home sewing techniques. I think I’d call myself an intermmediate-level home sewer. I often shy away from difficult-looking sewing patterns.

I love learning, but prefer doing it from my own desk
I probably could take a course in anything I’m interested but have not elected to do so. I’ve always thought I’d like to do ceramics, my daughter just began a class if where weren’t carpooling from work I’d be tempted to sit in on some classes as it is he may bring some of her projects home and I’d get to have a little fun while I’m staying with her. Last time I actually took courses were in ballet, because my teacher had a class going through the college, and I took a Cad course. I might need a refresher at some point to better make use of all the upgrades, but it has not become necessary yet. I’m unlikely to do so until it does.
