Doug French - The Ultimate Non-Traditional Student, Motorcycle and All

Monday October 20, 2008
Imagine hopping on your motorcycle and wheeling it to Costa Rica for dental work. While you're there, staying with a local family, you might as well immerse yourself in language classes four hours a day and earn a semester's worth of Spanish. That's what Doug French is doing. I'm crowning him the king of non-traditional students. Gretchen Murray writes about Doug, a student at Northwestern Michigan College, in the Traverse City Record-Eagle, northern Michigan's newspaper.

Doug has ridden the motorcycle highway to learning experiences in Martha's Vineyard, Boston, New York, Montana, Colorado, and Alaska. He's been to Europe and Morocco, and is currently finishing a cranberry harvest in a Wisconsin bog before heading for San Jose. I'd call that non-traditional learning. You can follow his travels and his learnings on his personal blog, Central America by Motorcycle.

For the non-traditional student who prefers armchair traveling, there are some fascinating conversations in the Continuing Education forum. Start one of your own.
