Humanities or Computer Skills?

Sunday October 26, 2008
A few years ago, Tim and his 80-something Aunt Alice took a humanities course. He hasn't stopped talking about it since, and whenever we talk about going back to school, possibilities in the humanities always light his fire. I've been wondering if this is just because of who he is, and I'm sure that's part of it, but I also know that with age comes wisdom about the things that really matter in life.

On the flip side of this, I'm aware of quite a few people in Aunt Alice's generation who are pretty hip when it comes to computers. Aunt Alice herself has email. I just love that.

What kinds of classes are you more interested in? Philosophical courses like the humanities? Or high-tech computer classes?

I don’t get many opportunites for formal classes. I have taken computer classes to learn computer aided drafting. I’d really love to take more classes in a wide variety of subjects, but I’m too busy learning LOL .

At this point, I’m more interested in creative classes. I do take continuing ed classes in my field to stay up to date, but I really loved taking my photography and jewelry making classes!

I like classes that feed what I think of as my spirit–classes in poetry, art, philosophy. They make me feel renewed. When it comes to practical classes like computer classes, I can usually teach myself about as well as I can learn in a class.
