When Adults Can't Read...

The Spotlight this week is on GED students and who they are. They could be anybody. Many are successful business people, and many of them can't read. Penny Chastain, an adult literacy coordinator, wrote about some of her students for the Muskogee Phoenix:

Maybe it’s the person who has foolishly wasted away life or it could be the wealthiest person in town that has the successful business. It could be the quiet friend that likes to stay home or the annoying person who is always in the middle of things.

It could be anyone. There is no defining description for a person who is not able to read.

If you know someone who can't read, maybe it's your spouse, you can help. Adult literacy centers can be found in almost every city. Ask around. Check at city hall or the library. Call your local school.

Reading changes your life. Not only does it open the world, it relieves all the stress and embarrassment of hiding that you can't read. Give the gift of reading.
