Free English Classes at USA Learns

If you're an ESL student, you'll want to check out the fairly new USA Learns website. It was created by the U.S. Department of Education in cooperation with the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) and the Project IDEAL Support Center at the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research.

It's designed for Spanish-speaking adults and has three primary paths---one for beginners, one they call "Second English Class", and a third for practicing English speaking and reading. Once you register, you can keep track of which lessons you've taken, and the program even shows your score for each class. And it's all free. We like that.

You can also specify whether you want the instructions in English or Spanish, which is extremely helpful if you're just starting out.

There's an ESL thread in the Continuing Ed. Forum. Check that out too, or make a new one.

And of course, remember to visit the ESL site at About.com!

It is very important to find out why your students are studying English? How will they use English in the future? What do they need to learn?

Be prepared to make changes to your lesson plan. If the lesson you have prepared just isn’t working, don’t be afraid to change it.

Teaching materials are very important, too. Most students are dissatisfied with some course books and activities. It is essential that you choose activities which are truly communicative and meet the needs of your students.

A good way to motivate students and liven up your classroom is to change usual activities into something fun, e.g. games. Students can also be motivated by giving a variety of interesting topics and activities.
