YouthBuild's mission "is to unleash the intelligence and positive energy of low-income youth to rebuild their communities and their lives." They have been known to invite homeless youth to join them and learn carpentry while they're working toward a GED credential. Their success rate is impressive. The story got me thinking about similar programs for adults. Are there any? You bet.
The Homebuilders Institute (HBI) works with YouthBuild and other private and government programs "to advance and enrich the education, training and placement of men and women in careers serving the workforce needs of the building industry." The construction industry in need of 60-80,000 workers every year as a result of retiring boomers. That's a lot of jobs. HBI has programs in place, including one called Make It Happen, and the popular Pre-Apprenticeship Training Certificate program, to prepare workers, both youth and adult, for construction jobs.
Interested in learning construction? Check out these great programs. You'll have an opportunity to learn a new career, and if you need your GED, you just might find support for that endeavor as well. Good luck, and let us know how it turns out. We want to hear your success story.
