Beauty school enrollments are up. Does it raise your eyebrows? For almost everybody in my generation, the mention of beauty school brings the song from "Grease" to mind: Beauty School Dropout.
But times have changed.
Eilene Zimmerman wrote about the new beauty school for The New York Times on June 6. Empire Beauty Schools told her their enrollment is up 17% in the last year.
Jim Cox, executive director of the American Association of Cosmetology Schools, told her that the ranks of older students leaving other careers for cosmetology are growing.
Here are some of the details Eilene provides:
Becoming a cosmetologist can take 10 to 18 months of training, and tuition can range from about $8,000 to $18,000, depending on the school and the program. Every state requires a certain number of practical study hours — from about 1,000 to 2,200 — before a student can take the licensing exam. Most beauty schools also require a high school diploma or G.E.D. Graduates can work at salons, spas or behind the scenes in theater, film and television.

I have not ever thought of going to beauty school, but my daughter once did.
When I saw your post subject of Beauty School, a song came into my head from “Grease.” Remember “Beauty School Dropout?” That was such a great song. They have it on YouTube under Beauty School Dropout song. Just watched it again – a classic!
Here is the YouTube link – and looks like you thought of that song too!
I always thought about entering the Cosmetology Profession, and once I saw the Cosmetology & Spa Institute in Crystal Lake, I knew that this was meant to be! In just 17 months going part time I now have a career and not just a job. I love what I do and am no longer wondering “what if”. I did it!
