I get letters almost every day from grateful people who have found this blog about what to do when your screen font becomes teeny tiny, so I repost it every once in a while.
Somehow, the font on my screen had become so tiny I was hunched over my laptop to read it. Not good.
I reached out in frustration to my fellow guides at About, and learned that Ctrl + will increase the size. It was like a little miracle! Sometimes it's the small things (not fonts!) that make a person happy.
If you can't read your screen anymore and the problem isn't your glasses, try Ctrl + on a PC, Command + on a Mac.
And if you go too far and the font becomes giant, you can make it smaller with Ctrl - (PC) or Command - (Mac).

I’m sorry, Abbey. This is the only way I know. Your screen font will depend somewhat on the browser you use. Explore the menu items across the top of your screen and look for anything that has to do with View or Fonts. Good luck!

Now that I made my font bigger, I can’t get my E-mail all on one screen. I want to be able to see it all at one time. Then, how do you take it back to what it was?
Nancy, Ctrl (or command) – will reduce your font again. Ctrl + makes it bigger, Ctrl – makes it smaller. Easy!

OMG! I love you! I have been trying so many different things to do this and almost ruined my blog in the process. I thought this CTRL + would just make it larger temporarily, but it stays that way! Just spent an hour with Blackboard tutorials trying to figure out how to get the screen back to normal size… in less than 60 seconds you CTRL + worked PERFECTLY.

I found out that when my fonts, while online, suddenly got too large. At the bottom right hand of my computer, there is what you click on to make the fonts larger or smaller. 100% works for me–if it is too small, you can change it to 125% or 150%, and change it anytime. If I happen to have a hard time reading it at 100%, I can change it just for the time being and return to 100%. Didn’t cost me anything to find this out.

Or on a PC you can press Ctrl and roll the button on your mouse (mine is between the left and right click buttons.)
I would add that hitting Ctrl and 0 (Number zero) returns to the original size (equivalent to 100%).

OMG, I could kiss you!!!! I accidentally shrunk my font about a week ago, spent an hour trying to figure it out, finally gave up. Somehow it corrected itself days later (or maybe my kids did it). The zoom feature also works with Ctrl and the Scroll wheel on the mouse and it take smaller steps than the + and -.
The Zoom feature you describe works with many programs but it does not change the menu and tool bar sized. Sometimes these are too small with newer computer.
This is becoming a big problem with notebooks because the manufacturers keep going to higher and higher resolutions and wide screens for movie watching.
When you buy a notebook you should shop for the lowest screen resolution.
To compare models, I have this PPI calculator you can use to get the smalles Pixels Per Inch screen. It nice to find a display below 100 PPI and around 92 if you can find it.

You stated that having a decree earns you more money. I agree, however, this is true in the private sector, as far as I know, not in the government. In the gov’t you get promoted on “WHO you know” and “NOT on what you know!” The gov’t says that you have a decree, so you are smart, but they are put in areas such as Logictics, when the person has a Biology, Chemistry, Mortuary, Art, Nursing, etc. decree. Also, if one has a decree, it does not mean that he learned something. They just memorized the material to pass the so-called useless curriculum in the decree they want. So, I say if you have a decree, go and apply with the gov’t. I love your web-link, it has awesome information on topics that I enjoy reading and researching…GRACIAS!!!!!!!

I was hoping this would help the problem I am having but it doesn’t. Suddenly the font size in title bars is microscopic. I need a magnifying glass to read it but the text in the browser is fine. I can’t use the windows magnifier because I need to type in one place and see text in another.

Hi, I just tried this on two news sites I read, and nothing happened. It’s getting more difficult for me to stay on line.
I know the ctrl +makes the print larger but why won’t it lock in instead of having to constantly repeat the ctrl + each time i change pages or siyes or each time i Log in again???

I did so many internet searches and tried so many different fixes on my PC and nothing worked. By some fluke I found your site and your solution is so simple. Thank you. I was a day away from taking it in for repair and probably paying $50 for a 1 second fix.

Good idea but does using CTL + and – mean the larger font
Is maintained when the text is printed? I find often that text which is easily readable on-screen prints off in tiny font.
That is a nuisance for ageing eyes.

It was quite well know but anyways might be useful for many in developing countries who just have started using computers. I need to know, how to increase font size when I’m taking print of webpage? Well, using ctrl+ you can increase font size on screen but when print taken in pdf it is just too small to read. Please, reply.

I am not sure why everything goes smaller but your tip works. If you have a mouse attached you can also use ctrl and the scroll wheel on your mouse.

Not a solution! I just downloaded Google Chrome and EVERYTHING got too small! I already use the CTRL+, but the fonts have changed and now everything is so hard to read! What am I supposed to do: sit ON the table???
It is very upsetting to think that all IT people and designers think in terms of 20 Somersetting. EVERYONE is going to have this problem: I have news for all: as soon as you hit 40 (and it’s around the corner) you, too, will have to deal with minuscule size fonts and thin fonts.

I have a WOW computer which isn’t exactly like other computers. Anyway, I hit the control button and then the + button way over at the end of computer on the right . Then I hit them together. Nothing. Actually my text is only sort of small. My problem is I cannot print out anything because it comes out in such small print there’s no way I can read. I really need to print out some info…someone please help. Thank you.

Bless you! It all started when my facebook font became HUGE! Then my son “fixed it”, and every other font became teeny tiny. I changed the size for “display” under the control panel, but it didn’t change the font when I was on the web.

Why not fix it permanently. I downloaded Google Chrome, went toPreferences, advanced web settings and you get the option to set ALL web content very small to very large. Unlike the Mail preferences this actually works and its universal (except Apple mail)

Is there a way to “lock” the screen. It happens to me all the time right in the middle of me typing something and the screen just shrinks down. the whole view…i’ve tried being very careful as i type and I can’t figure out if I’m accidentally hitting something or what. I think that what you posted was actually very logical.
But, think about this, suppose you added a little information?
I mean, I don’t want to tell you how to run your website, however suppose you added a headline that makes people desire more? I mean Screen Font Too Small? is kinda vanilla. You ought to glance at Yahoo’s front page and see how they
write post titles to grab viewers to open the links. You might try adding a
video or a picture or two to get readers interested about everything’ve got to say. Just my opinion, it could make your blog a little livelier.

Thanks for this hint, it rates up there with learning how to copy n paste from an About.com article I had read several years ago.
yo can also use control and your scroll wheel to do the same thing.
By this time some others may have suggested this approach to increasing/decreasing font size which has the advantage- you only have to hold down the CRTL key and use the your scroll wheel (or ball) -
forward to increase size or back to decrease. The change is smooth and continuous so you can go exactly where you want to be sizewise.
