Screen Font Too Small? Easy Fix for Text Size

By April 22, 2014

Follow me on:

I get letters almost every day from grateful people who have found this blog about what to do when your screen font becomes teeny tiny, so I repost it every once in a while.

Somehow, the font on my screen had become so tiny I was hunched over my laptop to read it. Not good.

I reached out in frustration to my fellow guides at About, and learned that Ctrl + will increase the size. It was like a little miracle! Sometimes it's the small things (not fonts!) that make a person happy.

If you can't read your screen anymore and the problem isn't your glasses, try Ctrl + on a PC, Command + on a Mac.

And if you go too far and the font becomes giant, you can make it smaller with Ctrl - (PC) or Command - (Mac).

Here's a bit more info: How to Change Your Screen Font

Public service announcement for the day.

I’m sorry, Abbey. This is the only way I know. Your screen font will depend somewhat on the browser you use. Explore the menu items across the top of your screen and look for anything that has to do with View or Fonts. Good luck!

I found out that when my fonts, while online, suddenly got too large. At the bottom right hand of my computer, there is what you click on to make the fonts larger or smaller. 100% works for me–if it is too small, you can change it to 125% or 150%, and change it anytime. If I happen to have a hard time reading it at 100%, I can change it just for the time being and return to 100%. Didn’t cost me anything to find this out.

The zoom feature also works with Ctrl and the Scroll wheel on the mouse and it take smaller steps than the + and -.

The Zoom feature you describe works with many programs but it does not change the menu and tool bar sized. Sometimes these are too small with newer computer.

This is becoming a big problem with notebooks because the manufacturers keep going to higher and higher resolutions and wide screens for movie watching.

When you buy a notebook you should shop for the lowest screen resolution.

To compare models, I have this PPI calculator you can use to get the smalles Pixels Per Inch screen. It nice to find a display below 100 PPI and around 92 if you can find it.

(132) Joe C Medellin Jr says:

You stated that having a decree earns you more money. I agree, however, this is true in the private sector, as far as I know, not in the government. In the gov’t you get promoted on “WHO you know” and “NOT on what you know!” The gov’t says that you have a decree, so you are smart, but they are put in areas such as Logictics, when the person has a Biology, Chemistry, Mortuary, Art, Nursing, etc. decree. Also, if one has a decree, it does not mean that he learned something. They just memorized the material to pass the so-called useless curriculum in the decree they want. So, I say if you have a decree, go and apply with the gov’t. I love your web-link, it has awesome information on topics that I enjoy reading and researching…GRACIAS!!!!!!!

Thank you! I flipped out. Knew I had hit something by mistake, and could not figure out what. I realized after reading your easy reply that I had meant to hit Shift -, to get _, and had mistakenly hit control -. Sent a largely unreadable, long email to a friend. Just resent it, and told her we need a woman president, too. You saved my day, my evening, and my sanity.
So glad I didn’t waste hours or days w/some techie who wouldn’t know grass from you know what.

(312) Ruth says:

Not a solution! I just downloaded Google Chrome and EVERYTHING got too small! I already use the CTRL+, but the fonts have changed and now everything is so hard to read! What am I supposed to do: sit ON the table???
It is very upsetting to think that all IT people and designers think in terms of 20 Somersetting. EVERYONE is going to have this problem: I have news for all: as soon as you hit 40 (and it’s around the corner) you, too, will have to deal with minuscule size fonts and thin fonts.
Menes have thin fonts – and dark background!
are you insane?
Get with it: you are part of an all-age computer users.
Cant find how to change it.
And voice-reader – NOT AN OPTION.
I am very insulted that no mature person has been consulted how to design this search engine. Mature = anyone over 35, it seems.

I think that what you posted was actually very logical.
But, think about this, suppose you added a little information?
I mean, I don’t want to tell you how to run your website, however suppose you added a headline that makes people desire more? I mean Screen Font Too Small? is kinda vanilla. You ought to glance at Yahoo’s front page and see how they
write post titles to grab viewers to open the links. You might try adding a
video or a picture or two to get readers interested about everything’ve got to say. Just my opinion, it could make your blog a little livelier.

yo can also use control and your scroll wheel to do the same thing.

April 4, 2013 at 2:22 pm
(535) ARTFRI says:

By this time some others may have suggested this approach to increasing/decreasing font size which has the advantage- you only have to hold down the CRTL key and use the your scroll wheel (or ball) -
forward to increase size or back to decrease. The change is smooth and continuous so you can go exactly where you want to be sizewise.
You will find some texts that will not allow this process. But try it. You may like it.

(602) Keith says:

I find the default resolution on modern LCD screens too small and I don’t understand how many people manage to work with these screens without damaging their eyesight. I’m short-sighted but with glasses my eyesight is average. Only people with above average eyesight can comfortably work with resolutions which give the tiny text on modern screens.

If you are using Windows, I recommend increasing the size of ALL elements, not just in a browser. On Windows 8 this is in control panel/appearance and personilization/display and under “Changet the size of all items”. I find 120% comfortable.

(613) E. Takata says:

How lucky I was to “stumble” on this fix! I too had struggled with this, esp w/a smaller “travel” computer. I think, however, that the Operating System & Computer makers should provide a way to fix this, since I’m sure many of those that problem “suffered” a long time; but there might be others still “in the dark”. I stumbled on this fix quite by accident. After all, computers should be made for all people, not only those who got a college degree in it, or were lucky enough to have someone in the family who got one, or has friends with that training. I don’t know how this author came to publish this fix, (and we thank her very much), but will this problem go on into eternity?

(618) Elaine says:

With over 600 people experiencing the same issue using both Macs and PCs, it can’t be a computer or software problem, so what is it? Does it happen more frequently with certain brands? I just bought a new Samsung last week and have gone crazy with the fonts increasing to size 22 and decreasing to pinpoint size that cannot be read without a microscope. I am not aware that I touched anything other than the alphabet keys. I have had HPs and Dells and never had this problem. I thought it was connected to Windows 8, (which I despise), but there are queries from people who have different operating systems. Does ANYONE know the cause? Thankfully, I stumbled upon this fix. Unfortunately, it is an ad hoc fix only – not a permanent cure.

This is the human factor, the visual adjustment for sight, the cat stepped on a key. To standardize font size would be as useful as Obamacare. The real solution is to educate as this article does.

(644) Lynn Norris says:

Web Page too small (or too large): Click on the “Page” tab (at top) when using the Internet & then hit “Zoom in” if the page is too small. Hit “Zoom out” if the page is too large (speaking of web pages here).Of course “Text Size” is on the list as well under the “Page” tab. The cause of a web page changing sizes (and font) still remains a mystery to me :) Thanks.

(755) pcm says:

Thank you soooo much. Glad to know it wasn’t my cat.

But how do I get it to stop shrinking in the first place? This just started for me after Yahoo changed it’s design several months ago. Every time I hit enter 2xs to make a new paragraph, the next text is smaller, as you say, until it is the same size as the head of a pin. I am tired of having to highlight and readjust the text of every single email.

Thank you to anyone who knows how to adjust the settings or whatever the problem is. :) Thanks!

(766) DianaS says:

I have tiny type in Gmail which is undoubtedly the result of installing Avast this morning, then receiving an email from Avast which was itself in tiny, tiny type. This happened on BOTH my XP computers immediately after installing Avast, so I have no doubt that what messed with my browser was essentially a virus hidden in the antivirus!

I was well acquainted with zooming in and out, but don’t want to keep zooming either. I intend to do one full scan and then remove Avast and recover my computer to the point before I installed it, and hope it will fix the problem.

I can only say “Shame on them!” for hiding malware in an antivirus program. :-(

This was/is a lifesaver.

My fonts shrank as I was setting up my new Windows 8 PC and my quick fix was to remove Chrome and reinstall it, but when it happened again I had a little more time to look around.

This has happened to me 4-5 times with Windows 8, but never with the many previous versions of Windows I’ve used. It would be nice to know what I’m accidently doing so I can try to avoid it, and to let Microsoft know what they’ve introduced.

About Windows 8. Maybe a good thing if one has been living on smarftphones for some time but it is a terrible shock for those of us who haven’t.

It should be pointed out that there is a defect in Google Chrome. Where suddenly, the fonts in the navigation bar and on web pages change to a much smaller font. My experience is that after you reboot and relaunch Chrome, normal behavior is restored. But it is annoying that a known issue which as been present in Chrome for at least 3 years is still happening.

I’m so glad I finally found you and your page. It has been a problem with us for some time. No more arguing here! :)

I checked site after site for several days. They were all difficult or just too many steps to have to go thru for a simple font change. I checked everywhere on my computer. I had seen someone change the font on their keyboard before, however I didn’t pay attention! That’s what I get and that’s why their are wonderful people out their making important things simple in a world that is really getting harder everyday!!

My husband and I need different fonts so this helps without having to make the change permanent.
