Finishing my last mile
“I started the process, figured out what classes would transfer, and decided to begin at NIU Rockford immediately after I graduated from RVC.
“My hope is to finish in five more semesters, in 2010. I started my education when my daughter was born. She’ll graduate from high school in 2010, and I will graduate from NIU with a B.S. degree in Industrial Management and Technology.
Influencing my family
“Growing up, no one in my family had a degree. I am trying to change things in my family.
“My oldest is now going to college and my younger ones understand. I have been going to school as long as they can remember, so they believe school is a necessity and is just a part of life.
Achieving my dreams
“Graduating from RVC after 12 years, hearing the music, receiving the diploma – that was emotional for me. When I go through the ceremony at NIU, I’ll remember my commitment and how long achieving my goal took. It will feel really good.
Advising other students
“Be realistic—a community college is a good place to start a good education.
“Returning to school can feel like a marathon. Try to find a buddy and go through it together. Your chances of being successful will be a lot higher.
“My daughter has been dating boys who don’t go to college. They come over, we talk about school and I try to help them find opportunities. It is just so important. If you don’t have the money, then fill out your FAFSA and take care of it.
“I was lucky because Woodward, the company I work for, pays full tuition reimbursement.
Learning beyond the classroom
“College exposes you to many different philosophies, disciplines and thoughts. As I continued my education, my viewpoints broadened.
“I even look at work differently. There are ways to grow the company that I did not see before. Now, I know this is about investment and making money.
“I talk to different people and develop new perspectives. That it is how school has affected my outlook today and tomorrow.”
