Share Your Story: How Did You Know You Were Ready to Go Back to School?

From maria

How I knew I was ready.

How did I know I was really to start going to TAFE at Swinburne? It's because instead of going to a high school, I went to a special school because my disability is a learning disability. I didn't like the staff; I was treated poorly, so I wanted a change.

Where I found help.

I found help through a service, a disability support service, I think it was. I am not sure what it's called.

My advice for others.

My advice for others is to do what your heart and your senses tell you to do. If you ready for a change, and if it's right for you to do and you can do i, and if you are allowed do it, why not, if there's no problem with it. Challenge yourself too, once you know you can go to that place.

What I Did:

I went to TAFE and to Swinburne in Prahran. Because the staff at my special high school treated me like I am nothing to them, like when students picked on me, I didn't have support, I was ignored by the staff. I still remember those times, even though I left that special school 13 years ago. So I said to my heart, stuff it, I want to leave.

I still remember those times, even though I left that special school 13 years ago. So I said to my heart, stuff it, I want to leave. I went to study at Swinburne in Prahran, which is much better for me. I feel happier and I feel I belong there.

Lessons Learned

  • Even though you find crap at another place that you go to, know that when you want to move on and go to another place, know in your heart that you can find a better place to belong.
  • It's good sometimes to have a change, to find something different, because you never know what is around the corner, and if you know you can do it, why not change?
  • Challenge yourself, too.
