Diploma and Social Security the Same Day? Why not?

Thursday August 27, 2009

My blog find of the week is a 61-year-old chap who is back in school to earn his B.A.

Byron Edgington's wife, Mariah, convinced him by saying, "You're going to be 65 anyway; why not get your diploma and start Social Security the same day?"

So Byron took a trip to campus and found himself chatting with an adviser a third his age.

"Why not now?" he thought. "I have the time; I have the inclination since the itch to be credentialed never left; I have the money, the lack of which is roughly why I left college all those years ago, that and grades, which were, ahem, sadly lacking as well. Then came Vietnam, marriage, kids, mortgages, the whole gamut, all of which pushed college further into the background."

His situation might sound exactly like yours. Byron cites the statistic that "non-trads comprise an amazing 63% of the student body these days."

I don't know how accurate that percentage is, but he's right in that more and more adults are returning to the classroom. Are you one? Tell us your story.

You can also find Byron and Mariah at Caffection.
